Glasgow Functional Fitness is a unique rooftop personal training gym, overlooking the River Clyde. It is based in the Axiom Building on Washington Street – a vibrant hub of fitness and arts. The gym is spacious and well-ventilated, with an outside training area which is a great spot for exercising on a sunny day or chilling out after a workout.
We have a well-equipped gym, with all the latest equipment
including assault bikes, air runner, Concept rowers and a Concept Ski-erg. There is also a great range of resistance equipment, including resistance bands, free weights, racks, kettlebells, slam balls, wall balls, weighted bags, TRX, sled push and rope pulls with a track, battle rope, plyometric jump boxes and even a punch bag for some boxing. The gym is kitted out with all the equipment that you will need if you are training for Hyrox or CrossFit.
Our facilities include male and female changing and shower areas.
We are in a prime location and our clients come from all over Glasgow and its outlying suburbs. We are convenient for public transport, with parking nearby.
We also have a sports and remedial massage clinic on-site, as well as a nutrition coaching clinic.
What is Functional Training?
“Functional training typically uses compound movements, meaning you bend at multiple joints and recruit several muscle groups to achieve the movement” (National Academy of Sports Medicine)
Functional training focuses on exercises and movements that help improve your ability to perform everyday activities, by training your body to move more efficiently and effectively. It focuses on exercises that mimic real-life movements, like bending, twisting, lifting and walking, using multiple muscle groups at once. It trains your muscles to work together and prepares them for daily tasks by simulating common movements you might do at home, at work, or in sports. The goal is to enhance strength and stability, flexibility and mobility, balance, coordination and endurance, all of which are vital for daily tasks, as well as improve posture, increase cardiovascular endurance and reduce the risk of injury.
Our bodies were designed to move in different ways categorised into human movement patterns. We’re made to push and pull with our upper body, hinge at the hips, bend into a squat, lunge or step up, and rotate. Incorporating functional training into your exercise routine will help keep muscles functioning as they were designed.
Examples of functional exercises include squats (which mimic sitting down and standing up), deadlifts (which will help you pick up a heavy suitcase and put it in the boot of your car without pulling a muscle in your back), lunges (which help with walking) and kettlebell swings (which engage your hips, core and shoulders for lifting motions).
Because functional training often uses a variety of equipment, it keeps workouts interesting, versatile and most importantly fun. This can make it easier to stay motivated compared to workouts focused on repetitive, isolated exercises.

Reviews & Success stories
“I can’t recommend Paul Mcardle at Glasgow Functional Fitness highly enough! After suffering a calf injury from running, I went in for a consultation and massage, barely able to walk due to the pain. Paul thoroughly assessed my injury and provided a targeted treatment plan that worked wonders. After just one session, I was able to walk out with little to no discomfort and I am back running again. His expertise and attention to detail were exceptional, and his caring approach made all the difference in my recovery. If you’re dealing with a running injury or any other, Paul at Glasgow Functional Fitness is the go-to physio!”
“Excellent gym and terrific personal training and massage / physio from Paul McArdle. He has invested heavily in his private gym, and it is a pleasure to visit. Paul is skilled and enthusiastic and makes personal training sessions fun and varied. He is an excellent judge of how far to push his clients during training sessions. I have been a client of Paul’s for three years and have benefited enormously in terms of physique, stamina, strength, weight loss and diet”.
“Paul is really knowledgeable and genuine. He is great at what he does and takes that extra bit of time to make sure he properly locates the issues you have. Has done wonders for my calf and shin pain!”
“I sought Paul’s professional help several months after having a knee operation – I had torn cartilage removed in December 2023. Although the operation was considered to have been successful, my mobility was still severely restricted by the spring, and I was in quite a lot of pain. I am used to doing a lot of walking, so being so dependent on my car was becoming rather depressing. I had 14 weekly sessions with Paul. They really were painful – I called them my weekly torture sessions- but he got me moving again. I can now walk without a stick, and I have at last been able to return to my volunteering job. As well as obviously knowing what he’s doing professionally, Paul is pleasant and irrepressibly cheerful. I would not hesitate to recommend him”.
